The photograph above, taken in 1921, shows an illuminated sign on South Murphy Avenue and El Camino Real welcoming people to Sunnyvale. Sunnyvale became incorporated in 1921 after it was renamed to attract Bay Area residents who wanted to get away from coastal fog. Names used earlier, such as Encina or Murphy, had been rejected by the postal service. The photograph below depicts the same corner 39 years later. In 1960, the left side of the corner became a strip mall. A gate reading “Sunnyvale Shopping Center 3 blk.” replaced the original illuminated sign.
